About Cleanco

Queensland has abundant resources that will increasingly provide a global competitive advantage, with the potential to catalyse a sustainable and prosperous future for all of Queensland’s regions and people.

CleanCo was created with Queensland’s most flexible low-emissions generation assets to put downward pressure on electricity prices, integrate renewables while preserving reliability, and support the transition to clean energy in a way that drives regional growth and jobs.

We have a target to support 1,400 MW of new renewable generation by 2025 and we will achieve this by building, owning and operating our own assets and by investing in new renewable projects driven by others.

Our activities will contribute to the achievement of Queensland’s 50% renewable energy target by 2030.

Our ambition

To harness Queensland’s abundant resources to offer reliable, globally competitive low emissions energy services to customers, catalysing a sustainable and prosperous future for all Queenslanders.

Our Portfolio

OUR FIRMING ASSETS

What is a firming asset?

Renewable solar and wind energy is rapidly increasing market share, but our customers still need electricity when the sun stops shining and the wind stops blowing.

CleanCo’s flexible low-emissions assets can ramp up quickly to ensure our customers continue to receive reliable low-emissions energy when solar and wind generators are not producing. Combined, our firming assets have the capacity to generate 1120MW, and a typical customer contract would be backed by supply that is about 90% lower emissions than the grid.

  • Run of river hydro
    • Barron Gorge (66MW)
    • Kareeya (88MW)
    • Koombooloomba (7MW)
  •  Pumped storage hydro
    • Wivenhoe (570MW)
  •  Combined cycle gas
    • Swanbank E (385MW)

OUR NEW RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECTS

Our projects will add renewable energy capacity to our portfolio, ensuring we can continue to deliver reliable low emission energy at a competitive price for all Queenslanders.

KARARA WIND FARM

Situated 50 kilometres south west of Warwick in South East Queensland, the Karara Wind Farm is being built in conjunction with the MacIntyre Wind Farm, which together form the MacIntyre Precinct.

The 103MW Karara Wind Farm will be delivered through a partnership with Acciona Energy and owned and operated by CleanCo.

The overall MacIntyre Precinct will support up to 400 jobs during construction and invest more than $500 million in Queensland’s regional economy.

Construction is expected to commence in mid-2021 and the entire MacIntyre Precinct is expected to be operational in 2024.

OUR CONTRACTED RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECTS

CleanCo is supporting new renewable energy projects across Queensland through Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) and Capacity Purchase Agreements (CPA). These commitments contribute to achieving our target of 1400MW of new renewable energy by 2025 and support the Queensland Government’s 50% Renewable Energy Target by 2030.

What is a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)? CleanCo purchases (offtakes) an agreed amount of energy generated by a renewable energy project at a dollar per MWh price. We then on-sell this energy as part of competitive retail agreements to our large commercial and industrial customers to support them in achieving their sustainability objectives.

What is a Capacity Purchase Agreement (CPA)? CleanCo purchases 100 per cent of the energy generated by a renewable energy project at a fixed annual price and is appointed as the market intermediary. As the market intermediary, CleanCo assumes generation dispatch rights meaning we can integrate the energy generated with our portfolio of assets and dispatch it in line with our trading strategy, providing further opportunities to support competitively priced customer contracts. The asset continues to be operated and maintained by the project owner.

Our contracted projects:

  • Kaban Green Power Hub – CPA 157MW
  • MacIntyre Wind Farm – PPA 400MW
  • Western Downs Green Power Hub – PPA 320MW
  • Dulacca Renewable Energy Project- PPA 126MW

CUSTOMER CASE STUDY – BHP

BHP is among the world’s top producers of major commodities with significant mining operations in Queensland.

Through a five-year firm renewable power purchasing agreement with CleanCo, BHP will meet half of its electricity needs across its Queensland Coal mines from low emissions sources, including solar and wind.

For the first two years, power will be contracted from CleanCo’s low emissions portfolio which includes hydro and gas generation assets. From late 2022, the newly operational Western Downs Green Power Hub solar farm and Karara Wind Farm are expected to progressively contribute up to half the electricity requirements.

The agreement will help BHP reduce emissions from electricity use in its Queensland operations by 50 per cent by 2025, based on FY2020 levels.

“This is an important step forward in BHP’s transition to more sustainable energy use across our portfolio, and a first for our Australian operations. It will diversify our energy supply, help to reduce our energy costs, and reduce BHP’s Australian Scope 2 emissions by 20 per cent from FY2020 levels.”

“This is a prime example of prudent business decisions going hand-in-hand with social value, strengthening our business and benefitting the community.” BHP’s President Minerals Australia, Edgar Basto (Source).
